Grants

A grant is money given to a certain individual on the basis that he or she should not have to repay. In that respect, it differs from a loan.

Most often, grants are issued by the government to those in need, such as families with low income or students attending post-secondary education institutions. In certain cases, a part of a government loan is issued as a grant, particularly pertaining to promising students seeking financial support for continuing their educations.
Grants are also given out by foundations. These grants can be either scholarships or donations to non-profit organizations. Many non-profits hire grant writers who assist them with obtaining grant money.

Billions of dollars in financial aid are currently available from thousands of foundations and government programs all over the United States. They are specifically targeted for future business owners, new business owners and existing businesses.

Small business grants can help open small businesses and expand current businesses.

Grants.gov allows organizations to electronically find and apply for more than $400 billion in Federal grants. Grants.gov is THE single access point for over 1000 grant programs offered by all Federal grant-making agencies. The US Department of Health and Human Services is proud to be the managing partner for Grants.gov, an initiative that is having an unparalleled impact on the grant community.

The charter of Grants.gov, one of 24 President’s Management Agenda E-Government initiatives, is to provide a simple, unified electronic storefront for interactions between grant applicants and the Federal agencies that manage grant funds. There are 26 Federal grant-making agencies and over 900 individual grant programs that award over $400 billion in grants each year. The grant community, including state, local and tribal governments, academia and research institutions, and not-for-profits, need only visit one website, Grants.gov, to access the annual grant funds available across the Federal government. For an overview of Grants.gov, please review our Vision and Goals (.pdf). In short, Grants.gov provides:

• A standardized manner of locating and learning more about funding opportunities.
• A single, secure and reliable source for applying for Federal grants online.
• A simplified grant application process with reduction of paperwork.
